Our library checks out to kinders. They get to choose from books that the librarian has put out on the tables. They get to check out one book a week. It seems to work pretty well.
My daughter's school lets kinders check out after a book care training as well, though she limits what books they are able to check out. they can only pull from books she puts out on tables, not from the general collection unless it is an area she has feautred during a lesson. It doesn't do much to inspire reading if you have a child who is already reading, yet not able to find books at her level.
I have had K kids checking out one book a week after a couple of book care lessons (Found a great coloring book by Madame Libearian). First we stayed in the Everybody section. Boy was there excitement when we moved over to the nonfiction area!
We do, but limit it to one paperback. We also hold off until around the end of October before we check out the books. I wish I had known this before my very first day on the job, frantically trying to check out to kinders for my very first time ever! :(
Our library checks out 1 book to Kindergarteners. We had not thought about placing them on a table. We think that might be a good idea. What my library is concerned about is K and 1 can not take the books home. The teachers require students to keep the book in the room. Then at the end of the year they are so smug about having all of the books returned. What they don't know is the library checked all of the books out to that teacher, because it is faster, and she was being so bitchy about us being late. Hah!

Kinder and first check out one book a week at our school. they can browse the collection. Why not? Second grade goes to two books a week.
Our school checks out to Kinders after a book care training period. :) They can check out one book, while everyone else checks out 2.
By thw way, that last comment was from Amy. :)
